LUDO is a Hindi language Netflix Original Film. It was released on 12 November 2020, which also happens to be Diwali. The film stars an ensemble cast of Abhishek Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Suresh Saraf, Pearle Maaney and Inayat Verma and many other stars.
Fun Fact: This is the second film starring Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra lead roles after Dangal (2016).
LUDO is a Hindi-language crime comedy thriller by Anurag Basu who also plays a cameo in the film as Yamraj. The trailer of the film can be seen below:
The movie describes the lives of four individuals. As the movie progresses, it determines the power of the butterfly effect. The story then follows a series of events that start with one butterfly effect; and how everyone ends up in the same place at the same time.
Apart from comedy, violence, and philosophy, the film very subtly portrays the genres of romance, sacrifice, and hatred. This film keeps you hooked and leaves you wanting for more.
LUDO is by far one of the finest films which have released in the lockdown era. The cinematography and film making is bang on, however, there are a couple of instances where the story is not completed on the screen, however, it is understood by the audience.
The use of lights and ensemble cast makes this film a perfect one to watch with friends on a lazy afternoon.

The soundtrack of the film is very similar to that of Life In A Metro – the stories continue as a montage to the songs. However, it is soothing and sets the tone of the film perfectly. The storyline of the film is a metaphor to the game of Ludo, where every coloured pawn starts its own journey, but end up crossing each other’s path and making a way to the Home. Similarly, each colour associates one of the 4 storylines, and how they intertwine.
A basic synopsis of the plot states that the film portrays 4 analogy depicting 4 colours of the famous board game – ludo.
The characters and storylines associated with each of the acts depict the colours perfectly.
- Yellow: The storyline of this colour features Aditya Roy Kapur & Sanya Malhotra as estranged friends who met each other via a matrimony website and end up having friends with benefits kind-of-relationship. However, everything goes for a toss when a three-year-old sex tape of theirs resurfaces 5 days before her wedding. The conclusion is for you to find out.
- Green: This colour features a one-sided lover, Rajkummar Rao who is willing to destroy himself for his childhood sweetheart, Pinky. He is still madly in love with her and cannot say no to any of her requests, and Pinky uses every opportunity to manipulate him. The story follows a hilarious series of events involving the revelation of Pinky’s husband’s unfaithfulness and Rajkummar Rao’s lover-boy attitude.
- Blue: Well, featuring one of the silent storylines on the screen, the blue story, may not be entirely about money, but it does revolve around it. A turn of fortune is seen when a homeless sales-rep at a Supermarket, witnesses a murder. The event leads him to find his lover, a suitcase full of cash and a turn of fortune in his favour. Though this storyline features the least dialogues, it is one of the most prominent ones.
- Red: The colour of violence and the colour of rage features Abhishek Bachchan who has lost everything important during his time in Jail. His daughter does not recognize him, and his wife asks him to abandon them. However, a huge financial favour is in the scenario. What would he do? – Leave them or arrange money for them?
Conclusion
Overall, LUDO is a fine piece of filmmaking witnessed during the Covid-19 Lockdown. As per my perspective of this Bollywood film, I shall give it 3.5/5; just because of one reason – the start of the film is attention-grabbing; however, during the end or “climax” of the film it was rushed; a couple of minutes more on the screen was anticipated.
The metaphor of Ludo is perfectly in place during the entire film; and at times, the director keeps reminding the viewer that this a metaphor to Ludo, boardgame.
The film, LUDO ends on a beautiful note – Three colours reach their homes, but one of them loose. Which one lost? Well, it is up to you to find out.
